LEARN TONE-CURVE IN - 5 MINUTES

Tone curve looks Terrible, right? But here I am to give you the simplest explanation, what is Tone-curve and how it is used?

A tone curve looks like this -

Mainly a tone curve indicates Shadows- midtones & Highlights

( If you don't know about them, look at http://photographiaindustry.blogspot.in/2018/04/one-of-most-important-thing-in-camera.html)

Mainly a tone curve indicates  Shadows- midtones & Highlights of the whole image but you can also divide them in Red/Green/Blue's in order to get better results.

But we will discuss only RGB - tone curve (Whole image's tone curve )

Let's go,

1st section - Divisions
X-AXIS

Red - Shadow
Green - Mid-Tones
Blue - Highlights

We can break the Tone-Curve in 3 different sections

Red - portion used for Shadows, which means that - If we curve the line in the red section it will affect only the shadow areas

Green - portion is used for mid-tones (Where shadow and Highlight are in approximately same exposure. If we curve the lines in the green section, it will affect he mid-tones

Blue - portion is used for Highlights . as usual. if we curve lines in this section, highlights will be affected .

Y-AXIS

If we slide the points upward/downwards - then the Brightness or Details of the portions will we more/less detailed.

Up - Brightness, Down - Darkness

 2nd section- The line

The main thing that you have to work with the tone curve is the line . The line is like a Hard Rubber Stick ,  always imagine the line like a rubber stick , these act like the same.

As this sick , if we break the stick , in the pointed section , then we can move the broken part of the stick, at any direction. The tone-curve line act same like this.

White points are the Break-Points - as the stick
* You can add those break-points by clicking on the line itself.

3rd Section - Example

The original image (Note tone-curve line-breaks & no tonecurve applied )

One line break added by clicking on the line ( No tone-curve applied )

3 Line-braks are added to get the complete control of Shadows - Highlights & Mid-tones

The line in the shadow section is bended and see how the shadows are Poped-up

If we down the line of the shadow portion then we can see that the shadows got less detailed

If we force the curve beyond their limit , some arrtifacts will be vissible just like that. ( To darken the shadows , Lightroom
create a way to balance the picture's colour sience that destroy the whole picture but shadows get darker and your job get done)

In the mid-tone section , the left side of the midtone is boomed , so you can see the difference in lower mid-tones

This is what happens , when lower mid-tones get lowed

When the mid-tones are pumped up

This is how it looks when you low the mid-tones

The right-portion of the mid-tones are bumped up

This is the look when the upper mid-tones are get lowed

Highlights are bumped up

This is when hoghlights got downed

To show you - How much "Tone curve" is important I managed a side by side comparison

All the adjusments are done ( Expouser - Contrast - Shadows - Highlights - Blacks - Whites )

Tone-Curve applied
